Radicalized at 29 when beaten unconscious by a police officer while reporting for @michigandaily after objecting to beating and arrest of the Black reporter next to me and then being charged w assault and battery and then going to jail the same week I defended my dissertation. https://twitter.com/sanclementejedi/status/1347346771387695105
Four reporters were arrested that day. The four of us had all been reporting on the arming of campus police in response to student dissent re: military research on campus @UMich.
Here is me in an AP wire photo, unconscious. https://www.michigandaily.com/section/administration/no-cops-no-guns-students-alumni-reflect-history-armed-officers-u

Also radicalizing: the false testimony of police officers at my trial, who said they saw me punch the cop.
Also radicalizing: While in jail (convicted of disturbing the peace, acquitted of A&B) I shared my food w pregnant inmates in violation of arbitrarily enforced rules.

Oh yeah and also radicalizing: the judge at my trial did not allow my attorney to submit, as part of my defense, thestories and editorials I had bylined, in the weeks prior to my arrest, that were critical of policing and specifically the deputizing and arming of campus security.
CODA: I sued the police for brutality and settled for an amount that allowed me to pay off a good chunk of my student loans and so continue with my radicalized life.
I was raised in a Republican household and in 1976 caste my vote for Gerald Ford in the mock election in my HS.
