When I was at SA 🇿🇦 in 2017, there was a time when I burned out so bad. I got tired of standing in front of people with PPTs, spreadsheets and doing hypothetical activities as training. In fact I was just bored with normal training & I deemed it ineffective. So I devised a plan:
I looked for people who are willing to invest their time and expertise in the youth. Together with my team we organised a study abroad workshop to discuss scholarship providers and ways to apply, prepare and excell academically. Gugu was a speaker from @studentvillage
I started following HR trends, especially SA ones. Twitter was quite a useful platform, introduced me discussions around the subject and to HR people like Vanessa Raath and Wesley Madziva who hosted career talk and job hunting twitter discussions weekly. I was intrigued.
Second workshop was on CV writing and self presentation. I met Elize on twitter, a professional CV Writter and Rhodes was then Head of HR at Eskom, we were already acquainted. The workshop trained my members critical thinking and networking, bonus professional CVs.
Most of the Organisation's members were green. I would cc them in mails for reference. They would listen in to my cold calls. I would take them along to meetings for observation. It was all part of the training. Whoever seemed ready, I would give them a task.
I suppose I made quite an impression on Vanessa and Wesley because they took my story to Candice Clark. Who later offered pro-bono career coaching to the organisation I was working for.
The idea grew to now volunteering for conferences. I searched Google for a any conferences happening in Joburg for 2017. I came accros Future Agro Challenge. The idea was to select a few members of the org and put then in a space where they have to express themselves.
Honestly getting the organisers of such a huge conference to even agree to allow us to volunteer was a lot of work. When they eventually did, I hand picked members with budding potential. Who would not buckle under pressure of a global conference. It was a success.
I would like to think that this was the pinnacle. I got a mail out of the blue to present an original paper at the Work 2.0 Africa HR Conference at Sandon. I Googled it, it was a huge deal. I spoke on Millennials in the Workplace. Still have those networks. We still talk. Amazing
I believe that this was the highlight of my professional life in Joburg. I was happiest during this period. I created a network, discovered the power of social media and the members got a different type of training.
