The future of the university must be that we refuse to perpetuate structures that tried to kill off all other ways of knowing & installed a violent universality on worlds european nation-states dispossessed. (And now is violently ‘re-discovering’ those knowledges without credit).
You can call what we need a pluriversity as some major scholars do. Or maybe it’s something else, drawing unambiguously from and with full credit to plural Indigenous and non-dominant knowledge systems. But what we need is to refuse to perpetuate imperial knowledge structures.
Maybe we don’t need a structure that resembles an -versity at all. What is clear is that western academia, as a set of interlinked imperial knowledge structures, is violent to its very core and has reparative work to do within each stolen homeland it occupies and takes from.
I can only speak to the specific homelands I am responsible to in Canadian context, so there are many other possible ways to dismantle the university’s violence beyond my suggestions here. What is key is recognizing and refusing the imperialism that drives many academic bodies.
