I wanted to put together a tweet thread that would encapsulate @BetsyDeVosED 's tenure leading @usedgov. After scrolling through dozens of our articles, I realized this is actually a pretty difficult task ... 1/
DeVos began her tenure as an outsider who gave little access or explanation for her positions beyond support for 'school choice'. As a member of one of the world's wealthiest families, she has been insulated from any need to explain anything to anyone: https://www.chronicle.com/article/devos-moves-from-wealthy-outsider-to-cabinet-insider/ 2/
She avoided the press, she literally walled herself off from staff at the Ed Dept and for much of her time leading the department she was unable to articulate any comprehensive vision of higher education policy, beyond negative stereotypes https://www.chronicle.com/article/devos-keeps-higher-ed-and-reporters-at-arms-length/ 3/
She will be remembered (briefly, perhaps) for 3 things: 1) a relentless effort to undo as many Obama-era regulations as possible, including measures to hold for-profit colleges accountable, as well as an accrediting agency that had lost recognition . https://www.chronicle.com/article/who-does-devoss-department-really-represent/ 4/
2) An overhaul of the Title IX regulations, with an emphasis on providing more protections for accused students that may lead to a quasi-judicial system of enforcement and lawyering up for students who can afford it: https://www.chronicle.com/article/what-colleges-need-to-know-about-the-new-title-ix-rules/ 5/
3) Perhaps most damaging, has been the department's confounding efforts to deny student-loan forgiveness to students who were defrauded or had colleges close suddenly. https://www.chronicle.com/article/fairness-in-the-age-of-betsy-devos/ 6/
So, goodbye Secretary DeVos, we hardly knew ye. (fin)
