What we've seen now several times is that communities (and even individuals) can hold both of these beliefs at the same time:
- Right-wing violence is good and right and Congress deserves to be executed
- Antifa/BLM/leftists instigated the violence and RWers are peaceful 1/ https://twitter.com/oneunderscore__/status/1347350085303214082
They can do this because the goal, for the moment, is not to mount an insurgency. The goal is chaos and symbolism: to desensitize the public to the idea of political violence and to intimidate the gov't.

They also know that the RW media ecosystem will absolve them of blame. 2/
Right now, RW communities want the symbolism of storming the capitol without the responsibility. So they continue to ratchet up rhetoric about forcing Congress to throw the election and about executing treasonous officials, while also spreading the "antifa did it" lie 3/
And as we saw, public figures from Newsmax to Fox News to GOP congresspeople will passionately parrot the conspiracy theory, thus cleansing the activists of fault among mainstream conservatives while also leaving the symbolism of the action intact 4/
In short, the RW communities are left with two pieces of cannon fodder: the images of confederate flags in the Capitol and Democrats hiding under desks for propagandizing, and the endorsement from GOP congresspeople to blame the common bogeymen. 5/
It cannot be stressed enough that social media enables this sort of internal contradiction to catch fire, just as social media enabled the RW extremists to prep for this in plain sight. /end
