There’s a revisionist talking point being parroted by @CongressmanJVD and other shamed objectors that they only wanted a hearing, not to overthrow the Electoral College. Don’t buy it. /1
That isn’t plausible, because he didn’t just vote to object, opening debate. He voted to exclude PA and AZ from the electoral count, disenfranchising every voter in those states. /2
And for what? He claims bad things happened. 60 judges and justices disagree, many conservative. And certainly not anything that would have changed a state’s outcome. And What a remedy— to throw out everyone’s votes? So again, for what? /3
@CongressmanJVD and the others did not say to the President that they were objecting, but it would not change the result. They contributed to the expectation that it would. Which is what led directly to Wednesday. /4
Because they told him what he wanted to hear, he went out and told the mob to fight. Rudy said “trial by combat.” He— and the mob— had a clear expectation— which Jeff and the others did not dissuade him of— that they could change the outcome. /5
Kelli Ward and others called for the electoral slates to be sent back to the states. Rudy clamored for “one more day.” Rioters intended to occupy the Capitol overnight. They all had a clear goal— to thwart the Constitution. /6
So spare us the mealy-mouthed claim that this wasn’t your goal— because you fed directly into Trump’s expectation and goal. Which is how we got here. No one in our state is more responsible than @CongressmanJVD. /end
