Thoughts and insight on Doomsday:

MF DOOM released his debut album in 1999, Operation: Doomsday. This album meshes comic book lore and sound to a retro and groovy beat.
1. The Time We Faced Doom (Skit)

It starts off with a mesh of clips, starting with 'Wild Style' which is deemed the first Hip-Hop movie. The second half is a scene from the 1967 Fantastic Four which talks about DOOM. Some nice drums in the background too
2. Doomsday

A beautifully sampled Sade and groovy production on this track. DOOM introduces himself as the villain. DOOM kills the verses. Starting off with perfection, one of my favorite DOOM songs.
10/10
3. Rhymes Like Dimes

A classic DOOM track. The groovy production is top tier and DOOM melds with the beat so well. DOOM's wordplay on this track is great. The outro is funny too. This track has great energy.
10/10
4. The Finest

The production takes a step back for this posse cut. The 4 minute track has so many verses where DOOM appears everywhere. It works, the verses are great and the production is low key but great.
10/10
5. Back In The Days (Skit)

DOOM used Fantastic Four clips. This could be interpreted as other rappers nervous of DOOM's "creation" like his music.
6. Go With The Flow

DOOM bars 🔥, the way he calls back to previous bars in the album. Smooth production as expected, the production is sprinkled with nice technical changes, it feels grainy in a nice way.
10/10
7. Tick, Tick...

The double of the song title as the tick of a metronome and a time bomb as in a villain is genius. Grimm and DOOM mesh so well together, Grimm kills the feature. The production sounds as if danger is coming. Another-
10/10
8. Red And Gold

The song name can be interpreted in so many ways too. This track expands the lore of DOOM. The production feels like a retro game and DOOM again kills it.
10/10
9. The Hands Of Doom (Skit)

The experiment of DOOM backfired it seems. Some interesting symbolic talk too. The story proceeds
10. Who You Think I Am?

This song is about monsters on Monster Island. The lyrics are complex and aggressive. The production sounds groovy with a tinge of menacing. It fits well right after the skit too.
10/10
11. Doom, Are You Awake? (Skit)

DOOM is conscious after his failed experiment which scarred his face, he vows revenge.
12. Hey!

This is like the greeting of a fully formed villain. A lot of violent bars to express his villainy. The production matches that menacing energy of a villain and fits perfect right after the skit.
10/10
13. Operation: Greenbacks

Another track in the perspective of King Ghidra and monsters from monster island. The production is really beautiful. Fleshes out more lore of the MF DOOM character.
10/10
14. The Mic

A storytelling track about DOOM meeting a girl or a metaphor for something else🤔. The production is glamorous, the chorus is beautiful. Not a lot to do with the concept I think unless I missed something.
Still-
8/10
15. The Mystery Of Doom (Skit)

More Fantastic Four clips, DOOM coming in with his perspective.
16. Dead Bent

A gorgeous yet slightly menacing production again. DOOM gives insight on why he raps and thoughts on the rap game then. The doubles for him and his character is so slick.
10/10
17. Gas Drawls

The concept of this track is insane 👇. The lyricism of DOOM is so unique and he keeps it coming constantly on this track. The production is minimal but smooth.
10/10
18. ?

This track concludes the concept but mainly a homage to DOOM's late brother Dj Subroc. Lyrics feels really personal and melancholy, it's poetry. The production is calm with a bit of groove to it, fits the subject matter well.
10/10
19. Hero v.s. Villain (Epilogue)

The album ends with the heroes stopping DOOM followed by a poem that's asking us to question if he was really the villain of the story. Insightful.
Review And Rating:

MF DOOM's debut and a classic. The ground he sets up to build his concept is effortless. Love the unique, groovy, retro production, fits well with the concept. What's not to like about this album? I don't have the answer to that
