I believe the middle classes have now become the salepersons of contending cultures. Where the ruling class narrative once dominated I believe this aim for hegemony has now been bastardised to suit the intellectuals of today. The messenger now sends the message which serves them.
That is not to say they do not perpetuate the ruling narrative, or the world view of the elites, but I believe that the narrative has shifted to the point where middle class represent and are part of neither upper or working class. The ruling narrative is one which is mixed.
Through the promotion of right and left they are consciously placing themselves on the correct side or history, which means they are no longer an opressor, but the narrative benefits upper class more than the worker who need and rely on a united class for social change.
The upper classes still benefit insofar that acceptance of left and right means a view to look right and left but not up or down. This I feel highlights that the middle class are not allies in our struggle and are on their own side, and their interests. Where I feel in the past..
That middle would be an extension of upper or working class, and not really a class of their own, I believe in time this has shifted.

Hegemony is failing as a result which is where the issues for the upper class has arisen. But while the workers are divided it is of no threat
to the ruling classes. Society has changed since Marx and Gramsci but can we truly say that the middle class are no longer the enemy when they perpetuate division of the working classes, and unconsciously perhaps due to the power relationship, champion a narrative which does
not benefit our class? It benefits them first, as they are no longer opresser but the salespeople in the marketplace for ideas, ideas which are problematic for our struggle. Hegemony is failing and is broken and I believe we will see state apparatus used in the near future
to push us back into "our place," but as we are divided due to middle class narrative, which is arguably an extension of the ruling one but still apart from, there is no need yet. We will know when we are causing problems as coercion will be used through the state.
But right now we are a long way off from that. I suppose a full study on society and hegemony and the salesperson of ideas should be re-examined and I'd welcome one here and now. There is too much to say for twitter but certainly I believe we need to be conscious of our "allies."
