We risk losing hedgerows if we ignore their lifecycles and just manage them the same way every year.

Trimming is a useful and necessary tool, but if we trim to the same line year in year out the structure will decline, they'll lose stems, gaps will appear & grow

Hedges are a dynamic system and need dynamic management to suit

It is impossible to keep a hedge at any one state indefinitely without causing structural decline

It may be as little as every 40 years, but all hedges need rejuvenation at some point, no matter how well managed
It's not just laying; there are simple wins with hedge management too - like cutting slightly higher and wider with every cut. Or cutting less frequently. Or only cutting one side each year.
