I have spent much of today reading through dozens of applications for a journalism job at Bristol24/7. In case it's helpful for anybody, here are some thoughts. [THREAD 1/5]
1. A unique cover letter is so important. If you are applying for a writing job, this is your chance to show me that you are a great writer. Make me notice you, make me laugh, tell me things about you that aren't on your CV. Why are you ideally suited for this specific job? [2/5]
2. You can kickstart your own career as a journalist. Start a blog, make a podcast, create a newsletter, set up a YouTube channel. You don't necessarily need work experience but I want to see examples of journalism being a genuine career option for you. [3/5]
3. Get someone else to read you're cover letter and CV. You may right that your an accomplished proofreader but that rogue apostrophe sticks out like a soar thumb. [4/5]
Here endeth the lesson. If you are an aspiring journalist with any questions about anything, please email [email protected] or drop me a DM. This is a great (albeit slightly perilous) industry to be in right now. [5/5]
