In a positive sense, black is the color of fierce Devi. Mahakali, Kali, Kaalratri, Kaal Bhairavi, Chamunda are dark, wild and aggressive Devis. They are prominent in Tantrik cultures. These Devis are highly revered as mothers, since they k!ll demons.
Like a mother can go against anyone to save her child, these fierce Devis go against the Adharmic forces to save the human civilization, who are her children.
Black also becomes important as Mahadev turns black, when he takes a fierce Avatar. May it be Rudra, Bhairav, Kaal Bhairav and many others. In scientific terms, Mahadev is often referred to as dark matter (mostly silent and untouched, like Shiva) and Kali is seen as dark energy.
Krishna is black. The name 'krishn' means black. Vishnu is black like the night sky. Here, black shows the all-absorbing nature of Paramatma. Nothing in this world remains after pralaya. Everything gets dissolved in him.

Coming to the negative side, black is the color of Kaliyuga, pisacha and mleccha. Whenever we say dark age, that is because of demon Kali. This demon and his dark effects have taken over many minds during this time.
