I'm seeing a lot of people out there assuming that Pelosi is dragging her feet. And maybe! Another possibility is that it's a lot harder to wrangle a caucus of hundreds of people and plan for something as big as an impeachment than it is to fire off a tweet. https://twitter.com/JakeSherman/status/1347325511341584386
Like, I've never had a break-up that didn't take multiple weeks to execute, and the logistical load is much lighter.
Since I was asked, there is a reason I'm warning people against immediately assuming the worst, instead of considering mundane possibilities (such as it takes longer to organize a vote than it does to fire a tweet) for the delay in impeachment.
I have grave concerns about how the social media race to be the most cynical and to be the most certain of sinister, hidden motives is feeding our culture of conspiracy theories. It's not "savvy" to assume everyone is acting out of maximal bad intent at all times. It's paranoid.
I'd hope, after Wednesday's insurrection that was driven by the right wing version of this — where the race to be the most paranoid led to conspiracy theories about a mass pedophilia ring — would cause folks to take a moment to think about these dangers.
Social media does a lot of good. But it also rewards people for sitting around, spinning out ever more sinister and conspiratorial theories of the world to each other. I've gotten caught up in it, so I know. It's important to check that tendency with some common sense and breaks.
It's not "naive" to contemplate the possibility that there are boring explanations for things that feel slow-moving, especially compared to the fast pace of social media. It's healthy. It is a good check against letting the worst aspects of social media colonize your brain.
I mean, I may be wrong, and I'm happy to eat crow. But for my mental health and yours, I recommend taking a moment and contemplating the possibility that things in Congress move slower than Twitter for very boring, bureaucratic reasons.
