We analyzed the social media chatter on this issue and this is what we found:

While a Khalistani agenda has been promoted online for long by groups like Dal Khalsa, #SFJ, etc it never had any real traction among the Sikh population in India or abroad.

Apparently, some news media – including “Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal” and a NewsX journalist ‘misreported’ a group of farmers’ protest. Instead of “Kisan Ekta Zindabad”, they reported it as “Khalistan Zindabaad”. (3/7)

It is interesting to note that the tweets posted were identical and within a time frame of 2 hrs. We also found lots of tweets just being copied and posted on the same day. Indeed, coordinated efforts just to malign demean the farmers and downplay their protests. (6/7)

By now #Khalistan had entered into the mainstream discussion and Indian media houses through their debates, reports, and catchy headlines in a bid to gain TRP escalated it. The prominent channels who took up the debate included Zee News & Aaj Tak. (7/7)
