Someone I interviewed on Weds stressed how bizarre it was to see Trump supporters wearing “Blue Lives Matter“ insignia cheer mob violence that injured cops. Others are baffled at how rioters posted videos of themselves breaking the law, apparently unafraid of any consequences.
I don’t find either surprising. A core part of Trump’s “law and order” message has always been that the rules don’t apply to him or his supporters, and that police exist to control and punish other, often non-white, groups.
That’s why Navy Seal Edward Gallagher, whose fellow SEALs testified that he endangered their lives and killed civilians in cold blood, was feted by Trump at mar a lago. That’s why Roger Stone, Manafort & other Trump pals who committed crimes get pardons and praise.
That’s why Trump called for military dominance of BLM demonstrations, and threatened on Twitter that rioters would get shot, while this week he told his rioting supporters that they were very “special” and he loved them.
