Fascists often misuse the concept of freedom to defend their ideology & they do so in several ways

They defend fascist governments by claiming the government represents the nation-state & thus the people, yet treat people as a monolith & thus ignore how various groups aren’t /1

represented & have been marginalized by said state

Their claims that nationalism & the need to “protect” “national values” as part of “freedom” seeks to mask their desire to enforce cultural uniformity & reactionary/conservative values that promote bigotry & lack of tolerance /2

for other groups

When they condemn multiculturalism because they think it’s bad for “national identity” & “civilization” they mean that they want a strict ethnostate or a strict adherence to a culture/identity no matter how harmful it is to minorities & other marginalized /3

groups

This is how fascists twist the definition of “freedom” & “self-determination”. For them they believe that freedom & self-determination should mean enforcing oppression against women, LGBTs, immigrants, racial minorities, & other groups they don’t look fondly on whilst /4

maintaining a strict ethnostate & monolithic culture/society thus viewing people who don’t fit that model as threats to their nation

They mask these desires by using buzzwords like “national unity” or “independence” & accuse their critics of attacking their right to /5

“self-determination” & for being “anti-democratic” despite fascists being notoriously opposed to human rights to other people
