should we vaccinate Premier League footballers now, before some elderly people, to help ensure live sport in lockdown and in exchange for clubs giving money to charity/ NHS?
Very decisive “no” vote in this - how could you dare put money/ entertainment over lives etc. Let me play devil’s advocate..
If you put saving lives above entertainment in all circumstances, you would abolish public funding for the arts and put it into the NHS. We don’t do that.

Prioritising the elderly for vaccines is clearly the right strategy. But lockdown has mental health impacts, and these would worsen for tens of millions of people (including many lonely elderly people) if Premier League football were cancelled.
We already make exceptions for mental health - eg allowing certain people to bubble during lockdown. To keep Premier League going, you might need 2,000 vaccine doses now - that is, fewer than 1% of those that NHS should soon be delivering in a single day.
Now there are reasons why you wouldn’t want to allow rich people to jump the queue like this. The point I wanted to make was that - although the benefits of lockdown far, far outweigh the costs, the costs on mental health exist and there might be ways to mitigate them.
This was intended mainly as a bit of fun, so everyone dunking of me - that’s cool too! Happy to add to the gaiety of the nation, like a Jack Grealish with slightly longer shinpads
ps the reason for choosing Premier League footballers is that I think they would give more, erm, bang per vaccine than anyone else https://twitter.com/dolphinsands/status/1347487576823881730
And I leave you with this message from a respected tweeter -
“we should absolutely vaccinate all footballers and I am absolutely not putting that view on twitter.”
