In a Puranic story I'd read about conversation between Yuddhishtir Maharaj and a sage (can't remember name).
He was asking sages about karma, reincarnation etc.
There are FOUR ways to live your life.

There are FOUR ways to live your life.
1. Good current life + Good next life.
2. Good current life + Bad next life.
3. Bad current life + Good next life.
4. Bad current life + Bad next life.
I'll describe all 4 below in detail.

4. Bad current life + Bad next life.
I'll describe all 4 below in detail.
1. Good current & next life is the ideal.
This happens when we do Bhakti. No matter how "bad" your life feels right now somehow through true Bhakti one finds access to infinite spiritual strength and joy that takes us through life's storms in a safe manner. Doing Bhakti
This happens when we do Bhakti. No matter how "bad" your life feels right now somehow through true Bhakti one finds access to infinite spiritual strength and joy that takes us through life's storms in a safe manner. Doing Bhakti
improves not only our current life but also ALL OUR FUTURE LIVES. Thus Bhakti is the ideal in every way. Practice Bhakti via listening and associating with pure devotees, eating Prasadam, Naam Japa (chanting the names Ram, Krsna, Hare Krsna Mahamantra etc), Kirtan and serving
Vaishnavas. Bhakti also very easily helps us overcome our darkness. I used to have a lot of anger issues and also was quite selfish. I still have the same problems of anger, selfishness etc but they have reduced drastically and effortlessly as my Bhakti has grown. Happens to all.
2. Good current life + Bad next life
This refers to materialists. All of us are materialists except for rare pure devotees and thus we're eternally trapped in the cycle of birth and death.
The more we give ourselves to materialism the more we keep choosing temporary and fading

The more we give ourselves to materialism the more we keep choosing temporary and fading
pleasures over permanent bliss.
This can also refer to people who lie, cheat, steal and improve their current material condition of life but ultimately suffer.
According to Harivamsa Purana a good king/politician gets 25% of ALL Punya of his/her citizens. A bad politician

Seeing exploitative politicians in Kaliyuga might depress us but if we've faith and wisdom we know they're digging their own graves.
That which is temporary can never give eternal pleasure. Only that which is eternal can give

That which is temporary can never give eternal pleasure. Only that which is eternal can give
eternal bliss. So search for eternal bliss - Sat Chit Ananda Vigraha.
3. Bad current life + Good next life
There is SOME area of life wherein you feel deep dissatisfaction. Maybe it's career, money, relationship or health. Everyone has something.
Whatever the pain, accept it
3. Bad current life + Good next life
There is SOME area of life wherein you feel deep dissatisfaction. Maybe it's career, money, relationship or health. Everyone has something.
Whatever the pain, accept it
Seek wisdom to remedy it. Improve Karma. Let that pain motivate you towards spirituality. Seek wise counsel. Take shelter of God and you'll find ways to relieve your pain instead of reliving it.
By doing so even though your current circumstances are bad and you endure at least
By doing so even though your current circumstances are bad and you endure at least
you are learning the right lessons, progressing on the karmic path and moving forward. This will improve your next life. If you progress too quickly circumstances will change in the present too.
Gratitude. Acceptance. Compassion. Empathy. Selflessness. Bhakti. These are key.

4. Bad current life + Bad next life
This refers to a life lived in peak selfishness, sinfulness and violence. A person who is a terrorist, serial killer, drug lord etc not only do they have the WORST current life full of anxieties but what lies ahead is also awful.

Ultimately the MOST important thing is to develop greater awareness.
If the current action I'm doing what are its short term implications, long term implications. What is the intent? What is the goal?
The greater our awareness the greater our wisdom.

All good qualities easily develop if one follows Guru, reads Shastra humbly & practices Bhakti.
This happens effortlessly by grace of Guru and Bhagvan.
Trying self improvement without Bhakti is like climbing Mt Everest without legs.
