I've been asked some questions—mainly from other journos -- about whether Indonesia plans to vaccinate the young before the elderly. If Indonesia did so, it would provide an interesting real-world experiment about whether vaccinating the young first ends the pandemic faster 1/x
However—despite news reports and ambiguous official communication— I haven’t found the govt plans to vaccinate the young ahead of the elderly.
In late Dec., Indonesia’s health ministry’s stated that, in fact, elderly people will be vaccinated before the general population. 2/x
So why is there this idea that Indonesia will vaccinate young people before the elderly? Some ambiguity comes in because Indonesia’s early vaccine doses are from Sinovac, which has not been tested on the elderly in Sinovac’s Bandung, Indonesia trial. 4/x
However, Indonesian regulators say they’ll seek out details on Sinovac’s impact on the elderly from Brazil, which has also run a trial that includes elderly, and will use that data in making vaccination decisions. 5/x
So the main takeaway about Indonesia’s vaccination strategy is that, like other countries it plans to vaccinate the elderly ahead of the general population once it’s confirmed it’s safe to do so. 6/x
I thought this thread might be helpful given questions I've received about Indonesia's vaccination strategy (fin)
