Pro-Trump disinfo is growing rampant across East Asia. Published in different languages, it’s often unchecked and far more misleading as local audience lack US political contexts. In HK & Taiwan it’s exacerbated since Trump’s hawk China approach earns him great sympathy...
such undercurrent is often overlooked by western mainstream media until way too late (e.g. Epoch Times, whose influence is still neglected or understated compared to others like OAN)
a few things: I LOVE Taiwan but it’s far more than a simplified liberal beacon as many prefer to portray (& use as a prop to contrast China). Both HK & Taiwan have long been disenfranchised in intl politics. Trump’s blatant lack of diplomacy is refreshing & makes ppl feel seen...
That adds to this strange outcome: Biden doesn’t seem to have a drastically different stance on China, but disinfo in Chinese languages still effectively paints him as a China-placating communist. To many, he comes off soft and meek compared to his unhinged predecessors
These observations aren’t directly about China, which is further complicated by state media’s schadenfreude, gov’s selective censorship, already influential right-wing intellectuals, collective fond of nationalism and strongman politics
right wing rhetorics have long formed alliance globally (on the heavily censored Chinese social media, volunteers translate PragerU content religiously and built large audience). This in turn feeds back to US politics (Jimmy Lai in Hunter Biden case, Guo Wengui-Steve Banon)
