Don't even mention healing until every member of the Trump insurrectionist mob who invaded our Capitol has been arrested and charged with felonies, and every official who egged it on or held back the police presence, up to and including Trump himself has been fired and charged.
After that, we can discuss healing the thousands of migrant families Stephen Miller (who in a decent world would find himself before the Hague), Trump, John Kelly and friends separated, the Muslim families kept apart by the ban and the nearly 400,000 families bereaved by covid.
We can discuss healing the Black Lives Matter activists who have been harassed and injured by police just for marching against police killing Black people at will, and the families of the two young white men shot dead by a teenager police allowed to freely roam around Kenosha.
We can discuss healing the families of the victims of police violence -- including by changing the laws that bar families from suing the officers who kill their loved ones. We can discuss healing the media such that we focus as much energy on Democratic voters as Trump voters.
We can discuss healing the Voting Rights Act, by restoring it to its full strength by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and enacting election reforms that make it easier to register and vote all over the country.
And we can discuss healing our education system, by actually teaching real American history -- not gauzy myths -- so that we can, as a country, confront the demons of racial hierarchism that are crippling us and dividing us and making our multiracial democracy unmanageable.
Yes, people want to heal. But healing isn't a suicide pact. Those who have toiled at the bottom of America's pernicious racial caste system don't owe it to those who have hung onto to the top rungs to heal them. And we can't invade people's hearts and change them.
All we can do is continue to demand that the caste system end. And everyone who wants to heal can and I'm sure will then rally together around that more ecumenical America. And we can isolate and confine to the shadows those who refuse to be a part of it, and minimize their harm.
But "healing" just for healing's sake? For cosmetics and without justice? Not gonna happen.
