1. So many moments led up to this.
2. Despots don’t appear out of thin air. They become emboldened over time -- aided and abetted by their enablers. No number of after the fact statements or resignations erase any of that.
3. Extremists aren't radicalized overnight. They plan and execute violent and criminal acts after being supported, inspired, and incited over time.
3. So many stood up and supported a years-long attack on our homeland by the very man charged with protecting us.
4. So many others stood by and excused or rationalized inexcusable, dangerous, and unpatriotic behavior.
5. In the days ahead, we need to focus on securing the homeland and restoring our democracy. Doing so requires judiciously examining and acknowledging all of those who enabled this havoc in our homeland.
6. Doing so is not an exercise in divisiveness.
7. Rather, we need to understand what happened and who is accountable so that we can work to prevent it from happening again.

Our security depends on it.
8. Ever since I can remember, my father has taught me lessons from his childhood. He taught me about the cost of enabling violence - whether through actively supporting it or by staying silent.
9. As we soon begin the difficult work of restoring the soul of our nation - the bedrock of our ability to promote power abroad - we have to clearly understand, articulate, and attribute what happened here.
