I agree with Ezra's focus on accountability for the most powerful. But I also think it matters that the people who actually broke into the Capitol be punished. https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1347241551412428807
There were videos of them coming out, high-fiving one another and saying: We did it! We stopped the count!
They looked as though they had just won a game of Capture the Flag.

These are people who don't realize that the laws apply to everyone, themselves included, whether they think of themselves as "criminals" or not.
That's a dangerous state of affairs, especially since we're talking about people who are willing to STORM THE CAPITOL.

Criminals are people who break the law. They are not people of a particular race, or people who strike you as disreputable, or whatever. They are people who break the law.

There are obviously times when breaking the law is the right thing to do. Civil disobedience. The Civil Rights movement. But people who do those things know what they're doing, and they take it seriously.
We cannot have people who think that just because they think of themselves as patriots, the laws do not apply to them. And I cannot think of a better way to get that point across than arrest and prosecution.
