Let me be clear: the T***p supporters storming the Capitol yesterday were not “radical” or “extremists.” They are absolutely expressing the views that the Conservative party has believed for years. For decades.
I grew up in Colorado Springs, which is evangelical Disneyland. And right next to the Air Force Academy. Patriotism was taught right alongside Christianity. It was “impossible” to be a Christian and a democrat.
I was in 7th grade when September 11th happened. I wrote a poem about how I disagreed with Bush’s decision to go to war. I was worried my brother would get drafted. When my dad read it, he beat the shit out of me, then lectured me about how Islam is evil, and Bush was right.
I became a Republican for a long time after that. Then I went to Bible college. I ended up losing my faith. Before I became an atheist though, I became a liberal. The more I learned about Jesus, from an academic perspective, the less conservative I became.
Evangelicals are willfully ignoring Jesus’ teachings because they want to uphold their racism and privilege. It’s a package deal. It always has been.
They highjacked an ancient near east religion started by a Jewish man and used it as a launch pad for their white nationalism.
So before you say “not all Christians!” or “not all republicans!” or whatever variant, consider the ways that this “radical minority” continues to determine the fate of this country. Maybe not all of them storm the Capitol, but they are 100% spewing and teaching hate at home.
