Good reminder that the systemic racism and insularity prevalent in Canadian media are usually fostered in journalism schools https://twitter.com/theryersonian/status/1347303006082125829
When I started at Ryerson J-School in '98, multiple instructors regularly reminded our 1st-year cohort that we were 120 successful applicants out of 1400+, as if to imbue prestige. I'd estimate at least 80% of our class was white, and I was the only one from a First Nation.
There's a stereotype of Canadian journalists having inflated egos and saviour complexes. But that has to originate somewhere. And those figures often end up in the gatekeeping positions in news media and in journalism schools. The insular cycle continues.
However, as an alum, I'm happy to see Ryerson having these discussions now, and employing Indigenous journalists as profs. But wow, that's not a whole lot of systemic change in 20+ years.
