What is the 25th Amendment and why are we talking about it now? (Thread)

Amendment 25 of the US Constitution outlines the line of succession should the President die or be removed from office.
Section 4 states that the Vp and a majority of the principle officers of the executive branch (cabinet) can determine if the the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. In this case, the VP would immediately become acting President.
The 25th Amendment has been used before for cases of emergency medical procedures, however, no President has ever been deemed unable to discharge the posts and duties of his office.
In wake of the Capitol riots, many members of Congress have called upon @VP and the Cabinet to enact the 25th amendment. These legislators include:
@SpeakerPelosi
@SenSchumer
@BenCardinforMD
@AOC
@ewarren
@SenSanders

And Maryland Governor @GovLarryHogan
With only two more weeks until Inauguration Day of @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris, enacting the 25th Amendment would effectively end Trump’s term and temporarily place @VP in control of the Presidency.
@VP has stated that he does not currently support enacting the amendment, to which @SpeakerPelosi and @IlhanMN have responded to with new articles of impeachment for @POTUS. This would make Trump the only President to ever be impeached twice.
