Yesterday, you saw people high on the drug of delusion, but what you also saw was an entire population that finally, for the first time in their lives, feel like they matter in the world. They're fighting an imaginary enemy because it's easier than facing their own failure.
That probably sounds dismissive, but it's not. When your family has spent generations feeling and being treated as superior to other people, the last thing you can accept is losing that social superiority. But they have. They're as poor as the people they've been "better" than.
They've woken up in America, the place where dreams come true, and found that they're actually no better than the black family that lives next door, and it's infuriating. And heartbreaking. And terrifying. How did this happen so fast? We didn't even let them vote until the 60's.
The truth is, their power in our society has dwindled. They're beginning to be outnumbered. The power is slipping away and they're desperate to keep it. Mind you, this is power based ONLY on their race. That's it. That's the reason they had any to start with. It's going away.
The reason it's diminishing is for all the obvious reasons. Population, economic shifts, increasing racial tolerance, but to them, it's been implemented by the state. Socialism is already here and has been for over a generation. That's what's pulled whites down into the muck.
There are plenty of social, economic and cultural reasons why white people are pissed off, but it's mainly because they see the inevitable coming. Equality expands year after year, and as it does, their foothold on superiority fades. It's unstoppable. Trumpism is a death throe.
The believe the conspiracies they spread. Truly. They think they're real. But it's because they're desperate to. They need a reason for their lives to be worse than their grandparents' were. They need an excuse for being less successful than that black family next door.
So there's an enemy. The state. Socialism. Radical left. Fraud. Politics. Satan. Evil. Whether any of those boogeymen are real doesn't even matter. They're lashing out against the unstoppable future, not injustices that have been perpetrated against them by the government.
So when I hear insane ramblings of people outside the capitol yesterday, raving about Jesus and pedophiles and election fraud, I see the danger, of course. I feel no sympathy for them. I see the blind rage in their eyes, but I also see fear, and it's the scariest part of all.
