I wrote to the US Navy yesterday with some specific technical questions about a story I'm working on.

They wrote 800 words back to me less than 24 hours later, answering my questions openly and without any boilerplate.
I know this is an old observation, but it is always dizzying to interact with US institutions after trying to pry the occasional sparse word out of their Canadian counterparts.
As if on cue, I got a scolding phone call this morning from Vancouver Island Health because I had dared to call a source directly instead of going through the communications department.
If you're a public servant in BC reading this, please know that when reporters don't tell the full story, or miss big stories, so much of it can be laid at the feet of draconian communications policies.

If you want to talk but aren't allowed to, we can work something out.
