The rioters who invaded the Capitol Building in DC yesterday see themselves as defenders of freedom & free speech. To them, their actions were an expression & defence of those freedoms. In reality, it shows the grotesque distortion in their understanding of these concepts.
They don't want freedoms for others. They want the privilege of being able to say what they want and do what they want, without repercussion. Infringing on the rights of others, isn't just a coincidental consequence of the realisation of their beliefs, it's an incentive for them.
They don't want equality. They want supremacy. White supremacy. Male supremacy. I see a lot of people who consider themselves politically centrist dazzled by the glitter these guys have put on their distorted interpretation of freedom, parrot their talking points in the mistaken
belief they are nobly defending basic human rights. They're not. They're supporting people who at their core want to undermine the human rights of others. They're supporting people who believe they are entitled to invade the seat of US democracy, terrorise public servants/elected
officials, & overturn the outcome of a fair election, with violence if necessary. These people are not freedom fighters. They are fascists, & they don't care how much everyone suffers as long as they're dominating anyone who isn't them. We need to cut off their platforms, shut
the doors they're trying to wedge open with their hate, expose their lies, hypocrisy & ignorance, & most of all, realise that our democracies are not infallible just because we've grown used to them. America has not fallen yet, but it is still perilously close to the edge.
The next US political threat from the far-right has a massive voter base in waiting. He has propaganda networks in place. He has a political party he knows will do anything to seize and hold power on standby. He has allies in despots around the world. All he needs
is a bit more smartness, & a bit more courting of the GOP, & he's good to destroy democracy. While America's electoral system, & the corruption within, makes it uniquely vulnerable to the next white supremacist, America is not the only country at risk. All democracies are.
