Some people were surprised about what happened yesterday, but belief that the election was fraudulent is extremely prevalent: @DG_Rand & I ran a survey on Lucid today: >80% of Trump voters (N = 331) believe election fraud is common & 69% *still* think Trump won *the popular vote*
(In fact, Trump lost the popular vote by over 7 million votes)
This survey is actually a follow-up of one we did on Nov 10th [ https://psyarxiv.com/szdgb ; more on that soon] where 60% of Trump voters said that they would view Biden as legitimate if Trump lost his court battles (but didn't concede). Well, here we are. 32% view Biden as legitimate
One of the most striking findings in both studies is that Trump voters who are score *higher* on a political knowledge test (and who indicate following the news about the election closer) are *more* likely to believe that Trump won.
“Only” 25.5% of Trump voters agree with the storming of Capitol Hill. They do, however, predominantly believe that Antifa is responsible for the violence and that the race of the protesters had nothing to do with low aggressiveness among Capitol police. So… yah.
Furthermore, most Trump voters have little intention of engaging in protests (both in Nov and now)… although, as we saw yesterday, only a tiny fraction of the most rabid followers can do a great deal of damage.
The actions we saw yesterday from Trump supporters may not be representative, but the underlying beliefs that they hold–that the election was fraudulent, that Antifa is to blame for everything–are amazingly widespread. We are living in different realities: https://science.sciencemag.org/content/370/6516/533
