Spent some time talking to Republicans who work in elections today. Yes, there's interest in moving the party in a different direction. Thing is, the apparatus never rly liked Trump anyway. Remember how it took him 9 mos to get 1 congressional endorsement? (Chris Collins, btw) 1/
The real question is: who is going to do the hard work -- and shoulder the risk -- of taking the voters along for the ride? In a GOP primary, a Trump-like appeal will be the easiest thing to fall back on. Primaries are small affairs that attract ardent partisans 2/
If the party is going to move beyond Trump, politicians and the apparatus will have to be willing to iterate and take risks out in public, in those primaries. That's probably how you can judge the seriousness of any expressed desire to change 3/
And those people are going to have to contend with this tricky question:

For the people who do want change, the past 2 days provided a powerful argument unlike they've had for the past 5 years: defeat & violence. This is a process I want to cover and if you're one of the Republicans thinking about it, I'm galen dot druke at fivethirtyeight dot com
