A request of religious leaders:

I don’t purport to have good or valuable takes, and the potential “like” count is what usually motivates what I’ll decide to tweet. But here’s something I’d really like to say

Here goes (deep breath): thread: (1/n)
What happened yesterday was deplorable and terrifying (yeah so was destroying private property in the summer, we get it).

We’re doing an ok job of agreeing on that, but what’s troubling me as a member of our community is our leaders’ reactions (2/n)
There are those who are speaking out against the insurrection, and there are those who are speaking out against the insurrection + adding the “but!”

(3/n)
But nothing.

Domestic terrorists stormed the Capitol while both chambers were in session. They were there, in the first place, for a reason; they were incited and egged on.

(4/n)
If you are a religious leader, and cannot condemn what happened yesterday, what still seems to be happening behind the scenes, without also noting the victories for conservative values and agendas, without noting that the LeFt iS aLsO bAd

(5/n)
Then, respectfully, humbly: shame on you.

If you’re a leader, than lead - take this opportunity to be instructive rather than reflective.

Please.

Be leaders that we need, instead of the leaders you think your communities want.

(6/n)
Leading doesn’t need to feel easy, or even necessarily comfortable - but it should be responsible.

This isn’t about perspective.

This is about reaction, and instructive leadership showing what that looks like.

(7/n)
In a sea of tumult, steady voices of reason act as a comforting life raft.

Speak up.
