Went for a walk before work. It was -3'c.

"Excuse me! Hello! What ARE you DOING in there..?"

Two women (and a dog) confronted me.

I wasn't up to 'no good' but...this could take some explaining...

a #StileCup and community THREAD...
"I've never seen this stile before" I said. "The frost highlighted it today so...I'm taking a stile's photo for someone called Stiles. For the #StileCup."

"Are you from around here?"
"Yes, I live next to Norene"

Silence (always works - inspires an equal mix of respect & fear).
"Oh. Right. Would you like us to show you a secret stile?"

"Would I? Can I throw a stick for your dog?"

We walked the loop, where I'd heard willow warblers last spring, high in poplars planted to screen a powerstation.

Talked about Lady Anne Clifford and rural broadband.
"Look! A stile!"

"Yes, I've got that one but he'll like the post" (took a pic or they'd think I'm not serious)

"Here's our secret one. Flowers have taken over. No not from there, come here. it looks much better!"

(I wasn't sure if they were stile converts or taking the mick)
"Have you seen this barn? 1717!"

"Oh yes" (I didn't like to say someone liked photos of old doors, windows and even bins too).

"There shouldn't be barbed wire on t'gate, should there?" I wasn't sure what to say.

But I'd enjoyed having a chat like a normal person.
#WalkInWinter
"Bye then!"

"Bye! Nice to meet you"

I honestly can't remember the last time I'd said that. I think it was back in Lockdown One. When I met a woman who shared wildflower names and showed me where sheep rustlers had once been hung.

Go out. Wave. Chat. If you can.

Does you good.
