I would much prefer energies be directed toward Congressional bipartisanship, normalcy, and cooperation instead of wasting breath on debate and discussion about impeachment or removal of POTUS.
POTUS craves attention like a child. (Have we not all learned that yet?) Congressional leaders of both parties would best serve our country by finding some common ground and working cooperatively to protect the institution of Congress and to restore decorum.
Ignore the child. We can survive for two weeks. Our ability to succeed after that depends our the speed with which our leaders move toward a return to normalcy in Washington.
Lawmakers should not help amplify President Trump in his post Presidency by feeding him the attention he craves. It may be tempting for Democrats to fuel the internal strife in the GOP. I get that. Please resist.
And to the GOP, worry a little less about the internal fractures, the squeaky wheels, and more about the opportunity for policy impact, albeit just at the margin for now.
For the sake of our country, can we steer debate to questions of our future? These questions may be boring to some but are important and difficult and each side has its own perspective:
Questions like: Should we repair our infrastructure? Is this a state or federal obligation? How should such investment be financed?
Can we improve outcomes in K-12 education and if so, how? What causes the disparity in educational outcomes and who and how can that be addressed?
How can the certain challenges regarding entitlements — Medicare and Social Security—be addressed in a timely, durable and fair way?
How can we stabilize the tax code? Improve compliance without undue burden? Raise revenues sufficient to match our obligations?
How can policymakers move from acknowledging climate change to sensible, cost effective and meaningful action to protect the climate?
The list can go on and on and on. Each issue is important and hard and politicians can disagree and fight and hopefully make incremental legislative progress.
These are also all issues that Trump knows and cares little about. I hope Congress can turn away from the outgoing President and toward the policy issues that require their attention so to help our country grow and succeed in the near term, medium term and long term.
