Cairo is a tale of 2 cities. On one side, we have ppl living in poorly constructed self built houses with poor infrastructure for water, electricity & transportation. On the other side ppl live in suburban heaven surrounded by parks, malls etc. But it doesn’t have to be this way
Egypt’s population grows by about 2% annually, which means to keep up we need to build 500,000 units annually. Due to complications with contractors, we are currently only building around 300,000-350,000 units annually. Here I’ve outlined some steps on how to fix this:
1. Tackling the informal economy. 1/3 of our economy to go UNTAXED!! • Launching micro financing schemes & increasing the budget of existing ones (like FMF-E) can encourage low income workers, particularly women, to peruse entrepreneurial projects & contain the informal economy
• Introducing employment schemes which incentives employers to employers long term unemployed ppl & young ppl. This can be in the form introducing tax credit schemes for companies which comply
2/ De-urbanization. The population of Egypt is around 100 million and 25 million of those people live in Cairo! This has led to insanely inflated land prices which encourages investors to keep building middle income or luxury homes.Using the large lands outside the city would help
3/ Allowing more integrated contracts for large contractors. As far as I know, contracts are still awarded on a build only basis. Allowing contractors to expand into energy sectors, roads other areas of building would allow more FDI & get houses built faster
4/ Incentives and utilizing public private partnerships

Egypt’s housing crisis goes back for decades and giving it is necessary I preserve stability and improve social mobility. Everyone having proper housing was one of the demands of protesters in 2011
This thread is in NO WAY complete or detailed but it gives a general outline. Some of this stuff is already being done right now. Some of it will succeed and some of it will fail. Only time will tell...
