Tomino Yoshiyuki "Kimetsu! Those guys really did great huh!"
Speaks about the "Now and Future" of the Anime Industry

brief live thread summary for now, upload a full translation later https://twitter.com/livedoornews/status/1347105701521485825
--What was your honest impression of the success of your "World of Tomino Yoshiyuki exhibit?
Tomino: There’s a lot of people with weird tastes out there. It's not a joke, I think it's a very unusual form when I think of typical museum exhibits.
--What is your take on its popularity?
Tomino: It’s become a different era. In other words, museums are no longer just an exhibition of painted artwork by one artist. Modern people have a deep understanding that studio work is when many creators gather around to make something-
- and see it as something remarkable, especially when it comes to animation. Fans alone wouldn’t make this exhibit so popular. In that sense, I was embarrassed to use this kind of wording until now, but I understood that anime is changing from “subculture to mainstream".
Tomino: So, in fact, with the movie box office, as you all know, live-action film is not comparable to anime. Perhaps without the hits of anime movies in the last couple of years, we would still feel that anime was "too embarrassing to call a movie" for my generation at least,
Tomino: but now even if all the live-action films fought together, they wouldn’t be able to beat anime films. And the final blow was “Kimetsu” (laughs).
Tomino: “The anime scene has gained strength” is one way to put it, but also, the general public has no resistance to anime-like things, it’s become accepted as an aspect of culture.
In particular, something ideal like "Kimetsu" has fans in the generation that is said to be old
--What exactly changed the view of anime in the world?
Tomino: To that I can answer with one phrase. It means that everyone is "accustomed to video". The training started with movies, and with the spread of videos online, the amount of videos you watch on a daily basis is dozens-
of times greater than people 10 years ago, 20 years ago, let alone 50 years ago. That's why the sensitivity to images has increased dramatically. It wasn't consciously training, but we were all trained to get used to video.
Tomino: And now there are fun tools for amateurs like TikTok. With such tools, if you play with video to that extent, professionals can't keep up with the numbers anymore.
Tomino: To tell the truth, I wasn’t aware of TikTok until about half a year since it started. Someone told me about it, and I chased the new uploads for about a month before completely losing interest in it.
Tomino: Well, I might check it out if a young lady I’m interested in shows up (laughs) but I probably won’t. Would I be cancelled if I said [Tiktok] is full of people to which I think “someone like you shouldn’t be on screen”? (laughs)
Tomino: I stay updated with the world because I'm not an amateur and it would be bad to be clueless. The motivation for this is that I'm constantly looking for any new talent who can help me with my next work. I'd bring up some names and ask the other staff what they think.
Tomino: Even down to the voice actors. However, it is unlikely that they will fit the work. That's why I'm really annoyed with the members of Demon Slayer! "They beat me to it!” (laughs).
Tomino: I’ve thought “I want to use this person because I like them!” and sometimes I even managed to fit them in, but that method is no good. My thoughts are my personal tastes, and they're a little different from the flavor of the work itself.
Tomino *shakes fists at the sky* That's why Kimetsu!! They did it really well! For real, how did they find these combinations? The voice actors are as you all know, but also the music and the composers, everything, it’s amazing they went with these members.
Tomino: In that sense, I’m past feeling envious and just think “you guys!!!!” (laughs). However, I don't think "Kimetsu" was born out of intention, rather it's quite a coincidence.
--That said, was it not the power of the work that attracted the goddess of fate?
Tomino: That is definitely true. When it comes to Demon Slayer -I will "never remember" the vocalist's name (lol)- but she probably liked that work. That's why she was so serious.
Tomino: These kinds of encounters are so fascinating in that they’re usually decided by one-shot chances. Because isn’t it true that it was just a chance encounter? At /some/ studio *cough cough* Key x PA Works *cough*, she happened to be there and she was chosen. That was it.
Tomino: Life is interesting and has meaning because of those unpredictable elements. So we have to meet people who are looking to be discovered, and I also have to make sure that I can be caught. That's why we foster the so-called talent by repeating lessons on a daily basis-
-to create an aura for yourself, “this is how I want to be.” Kids who consistently train like this are the kinds that get discovered.
