A thread of some of the oldest photographs of the North East. Would welcome further submissions! This first group are of the great fire of Newcastle & Gateshead in 1854 (a warehouse full of nitrates caught fire and exploded).
Seaton Delaval Hall in 1855 showing the short-lived extension to the east wing. Alongside is the fantastic Indian copy of Delaval Hall at Dilkusha Kothi in Lucknow, taken in 1858 after the Indian Mutiny/Rebellion of the previous year.
A daguerreotype of Robert Stephenson from 1851, and his High Level Bridge across the Tyne photographed in 1865
The Mayor of South Shields, Terrot Glover (seated), with Alderman Walker and town clerk Thomas Salmon after presenting a loyal address to Queen Victoria on the marriage of the Princess Royal to Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia in February 1858.
Newcastle Station in 1859 showing the train built nearby by Robert Stephenson & Co. at Forth Banks for the Wāli of Egypt & the Sudan, Sa'id Pasha (who drove it himself).
An all time favourite of mine: the Tynemouth Election Hustings of 1861 in front of North Shields Town Hall.
W. Coulson, Master Sinker, and four of his men at the Pit Mouth, New Hartley Colliery, 1862. 204 men and boys (and 40 pit ponies) were slowly suffocating underground when this was taken. Despite the heroics of these men, none were saved.
Another good one from 1862. Stovepipes galore!

Not strictly ‘North East’ but this photograph is a masterpiece. https://twitter.com/northumbriana/status/908094107519680513
