The pandemic has highlighted the policy differences between states. We have seen that for COVID-19 risk , there are consequences to living in a right-leaning state vs. a left-leaning state.

But what about other domains of health?

In this new study, we ask: Does a state's policy orientation (right-leaning or left-leaning) have consequences for infant health in the US?
4/11
Our analysis is built on the brilliant work of Political Scientist @JakeMGrumbach, who constructed a holistic measure of state policy orientation from data on 150 unique policies, across 16 domains, spanning over 3 decades.

We also build on the intuition that runs through much of the work by senior author @DrRitaHamad that policies matter for population health inequalities.

For example: "Association of Revised WIC Food Package on Perinatal and Birth Outcomes" https://ja.ma/39hkuy6
7/11
Indeed, we find infant health is associated with the holistic state policy environment. There is a higher likelihood of preterm birth and low birth-weight among infants born in more right-leaning states.

Unfortunately, mothers in the U.S. experience a differential risk of adverse birth outcomes simply due to their state of residence.
9/11
But further research is needed to clarify the basis of the association. States have been polarized for a while now so it is hard to distinguish state policy effects from other enduring aspects of state context in order to tell a causal story.

Regardless, this work makes one thing clear: understanding the role of state policy orientation is ESSENTIAL to understanding population health and health disparities across the USA. State context matters for mother's & infant's health. @ia4phs #pophealth
