Social platforms and their culpability in the radicalization of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of Americans is a deeply complex issue.

As a trans person, this radicalization has made me less safe, full stop.

Platforms simply have too much power. https://cnb.cx/35l3HZI
To be honest I get their hesitation on being the arbiters of what speech is allowed because there are robust protections of speech — but at the same time these platforms make editorial decisions even without making them. They can protect the user experience and public safety.
For instance, a platform like Twitter should have more robust controls for the user experience that are easy to use and understand. Platforms have a lot of these in place but they’re not front and center.

Similarly, the algorithms should be adjusted to emphasize better discourse
Also, sexist or transphobic or homophobic attacks and threats of bodily harm should be taken a hell of a lot more seriously. There should be no place for threats of violence but platforms continually are playing catch up. Stop and set up tools to get ahead of this, you can do it.
Platforms cannot take neutral stances on issues like ‘should we have a democracy’ or ’should trans people have the right to exist’ because deciding to be neutral is in fact an editorial decision. Platforms should be transparent about their decisions but they need to make them.
