Tbh I can’t exactly 100 percent blame Punjabi’s from Delhi not speaking Punjabi fluently. Thread on why
I do 100 percent wish Punjabi’s in Delhi did retain both languages but they have been through a lot so I can’t blame them
1. All came from west Punjab, where there was multiple dialects of Punjabi spoken and even different languages like saraiki/ pahari/ Punjabi/ hindoko, unlike Punjab india where it’s mostly the same. So there was no universal Punjabi
British raj started teaching west Punjabi’s Urdu in school prior to 1947, ( they teached Muslim dominant regions urdu, Hindu dominant hindi, and sikh dominant Gurmukhi Punjabi) so eradication of Punjabi was already in effect by the British ( in effort to create religious divides)
Most Punjabi’s ( khatri) in west Punjab were sent to Delhi while jatts were sent to Punjab. The transition was essentially easier for those sent to Punjab as they could go back to doing kheti in a Punjabi speaking state so no need to intergrate as much or learn new trades
Well those sent to Delhi had to start up their businesses again in a Urdu speaking city where the local Delhiites hated the new Punjabi immigrants and so the west Punjabi’s had to sacrifice more to adapt being business man and in a Urdu/hindi speaking region
There have been four generations of Delhi Punjabi’s since the partition, this generation can mostly understand Punjabi but speak very badly well the last three Punjabi was speaken fluently. Delhi is 40 percent Punjabi and even now 10 percent speak punjabi as their primary lang
I essentially just followed the narrative that Delhi Punjabi’s didn’t value Punjabi, but I feel like there should also be consideration for the different scenario they were put through, well I do wish most of this generation spoke fluently I can’t 100 percent blame them
As sad as it is I doubt 3 generations from now even our kids in the west will be fluent Punjabi speakers ( hopefully that isn’t true) anyway I just felt like compiling my thoughts as most people view Delhi Punjabi’s as sellouts without considering their situation
