Liverpool stand to suffer a financial hit of at least £50m should they fail to make top four this season and therefore drop out of the Champions League. For this reason alone, even bringing in an experienced centre-back on loan for a £2m fee might be a price worth paying.
The club is only four points off of fifth place. Liverpool absolutely should make top four, but a lengthy Fabinho injury before the season ends could easily result in the club slipping out of the Champions League places.
If a long-term centre-back solution is lined up for the summer transfer window, then it's sensible to wait until then but given only one senior centre-back with an awful injury record is available this season, bringing a loan signing in would be prudent mitigation.
