I think an underrated theory at this stage is that the Capitol Police deal with peaceful protest groups every day and as such are fundamentally are not used to the idea that a protest group, even an armed one, has come there with the intent of overpowering the police
"The police are racist" and "the police are kind of incompetent" are not mutually exclusive points. They're mutually reinforcing. https://twitter.com/joannbrookes/status/1347272825292296192
There's nothing contradictory about the idea that the Capitol Police committed brutality against small peaceful protests in the past and the idea that they were unprepared for a mob intent on occupying the building. In fact they are complementary. https://twitter.com/ncougoule/status/1347279412752834560
Isn't a big part of the left-wing theory of how to protest the police is that at a certain point you screw their battle plans up if you can simply outnumber them? Yesterday the right wing validated that theory.
I grew up in Arlington and worked in the Senate for two summers https://twitter.com/Spaceweft/status/1347301254184112128
Truth is while I worked there I always assumed there was some secret underground bunker full of capitol police to handle big events but their presence at the entrances to the senate buildings was not overwhelming. You encounter way more intimidating cops at Penn Station.
You didn't even need ID to go through the rotunda entrance to Russell. Any tourist can pop in there and use the bathroom.
