Who knows what kind of childcare these families have had to cobble together in the absence of an actual SAFE place to send their children during the day. Notice the trend correlated to income.
Lower income families have no choice. School closure means they cobble together childcare, which may or may not be safe. Many of their parents are working in essential jobs and do not have the luxury to "stay home". WE HAVE FAILED THEM.
The probability of an asymptomatic child spreading COVID to an adult (or another child) is incredibly low, ESP in an environment w/ protocols in place. There is literally no reason why these children cannot be educated in an actual school with their peers.
"The student positivity rate was 32% in the Maywood, Bell and Cudahy communities, where families have a median income of about $37,000, according to district data, and 25% in Mid-City, where the median income is about $41,000."
"In contrast, the rate was 4.3% in Venice, with a median income of about $73,000, and 7.1% in the Woodland Hills, West Hills and Tarzana area, with a median income of about $81,000."
Where are the Journalists advocating for these families? Are people aware that even in the UK, RIGHT THIS SECOND, in the midst of the worst infection rate in the EU, schools are open to vulnerable children & kids of key workers? Teachers are still working in person in the UK!
And what have we done in this country? Abandoned the working class families and their children for the pseudosafety of ONE SINGLE PRIVILEGED WORKER. And guess what? It failed. It was a complete failure.
We have destroyed the life trajectory of the least privileged children in this country and it has not resulted in reduced infections for these communities. In fact, it seems to have exacerbated them. A poorly thought out policy steeped in fear and privilege.
At what point do politicians and union thugs examine the data and actually change course? May I again remind everyone that 50% of schools in the US opened in Sept and this phenomenon is unique to Dem areas. https://cai.burbio.com/school-opening-tracker/
We don't need another study. We don't need a vaccine for Teachers. We never did. We have anecdotes throughout the US and EU. Teachers have no increased rate of COVID infection than any other profession. It's time for those who have basked in privilege to step up and serve.
Unforgivable:
"Not long ago, the Pasadena Unified School District had a projected reopening date of Jan. 11, but it went in full reverse last month, even halting in-person services for small groups of students with disabilities and athletic conditioning programs in December."
They are literally halting services for small groups of students with disabilities. And what exactly will these students do? SWD and ELL students have suffered disproportionately from school closures. Who is standing up for them?
I thought NY was bad, but man the gaslighting by LAUSD. They actually opened up COVID testing facilities so they can test people but not actually open their doors to educate the kids. https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/16990
