Yesterday afternoon, people witnessed a violent and chaotic riot at the United States Capitol Building to protest our democracy at work and obstruct the certification of a lawful presidential election.
Like many of you, I simply could not grasp this destructive activity. While @BGSU may be miles away from our nation’s capital, I recognize that our community is still impacted and may be experiencing a range of emotions and thoughts about these disturbing and reckless events.
Regardless of your perspective, your beliefs, what you are passionate about, whether you have an interest in politics or not, we must choose hope over hate. We must choose understanding and reconciliation over violence. We must do better.
Our polarization and divisions must be overcome, especially if we are committed to a democracy that works for each of us. As students of democracy, we get to decide that yesterday’s disgraceful scenes and actions do not deter our commitment to move our republic forward.
In fact, it is that same spirit – one of grit, resiliency and resolve, which is woven into the history of this nation. Yesterday was a sad day for America. I do not have all the answers, but collectively we do.
As a public university for the public good, let’s meet the opportunity to come together to restore the integrity of who we are – a people who should always strive to form a more perfect Union.
