I am embarking on a huge personal project

I grew up with my mother talking in idioms daily, ended up going to uni to pursue Punjabi literature.
Punjabi alphabet has 35 letters and I will be sharing 35 of my favourite idioms starting with each letter of alphabet. Here we go:

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਗੁੜ੍ਹਤੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲੀ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ, ਅਖਾਉਤਾਂ, ਕਹਾਵਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੰਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਝਲਕ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀ ਲਿੱਪੀ ਪੈਂਤੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿਕ ਅੱਖਰ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਸੰਦੀਦਾ ਅਖਾਣ:

1) ੳ-Ooda

ਉੱਖਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ
ਤਾਂ ਮੋਹਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਡਰ

If you have put your head in the mortar
you shouldn't be afraid of the pestle

2) ਅ-Aida

ਅਮੀਰ ਦੀ ਮਰ ਗਈ ਕੁੱਤੀ
ਉਹ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛੀ,
ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਦੀ ਮਰ ਗਈ ਮਾਂ
ਉਹਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਲਿਆ ਨਾਂ

Rich one's dog died
village came to mourn
poor one's mother died
nobody said her name

3) ੲ-Eedi

ਇਕ ਚੁੱਪ
ਸੌ ਸੁੱਖ

One quiet
one hundred pleasures

4) ਸ-Sassa

ਸਸਤਾ ਰੋਵੇ ਵਾਰ ਵਾਰ
ਮਹਿੰਗਾ ਰੋਵੇ ਇਕ ਵਾਰ

Cheap cries a hundred times
Pricy only cries once

5) ਹ-Hahha

ਹਸਾਏ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ
ਰੁਆਏ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ

One who makes you laugh is forgotten
one who makes you cry is remembered

6) ਕ-Kakka

ਕੋਈ ਮਰੇ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵੇ
ਸੁਥਰਾ ਘੋਲ ਪਤਾਸੇ ਪੀਵੇ

Someone dies, someone lives
The Careless does his own thing

7) ਖ-Khakkha

ਖੇਤੀ ਖਸਮਾਂ ਸੇਤੀ

Businesses prevail when the owner takes a personal interest.

8) ਗ-Gagga

ਗਿੱਦੜ ਦਾਖ ਨਾ ਅਪੜੇ
ਆਖੇ ਥੂਹ ਕੌੜੀ

Grapes are sour

9) ਘ-Ghagga

ਘਰ ਦੀ ਖੰਡ ਕਿਰਕਿਰੀ
ਬਾਹਰ ਦਾ ਗੁੜ ਮਿੱਠਾ

Homemade sugar feels inferior
Store-bought jaggery feels superior

10) ਙ-ṅaṅā

No word starts with ਙ

11) ਚ-Chahchha

ਚੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਨਾ ਵੇਖੋ
ਚੋਰ ਦੇ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖੋ

Don't witness the thief when he eats
Witness the thief when he gets beat

12) ਛ-Chhacchha

ਛੱਜ ਤਾਂ ਬੋਲੇ
ਛਾਣਨੀ ਕੀ ਬੋਲੇ

Why should a faulty
count faults in others

13) ਜ-Jajja

ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਭਿੱਜੇ ਕੰਬਲੀ
ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ ਭਾਰੀ ਹੋਏ

The more life experience you get
the wiser you keep becoming

14) ਝ-Jhajja

ਝੱਗਾ ਚੁੱਕਿਆਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਪੇਟ ਨੰਗਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ

You get smeared when you gossip about your own family.

15) ਞ-nanna

16) ਟ-Tainka

ਟਕੇ ਸਹਿਆ ਮਹਿੰਗਾ
ਰੁਪੱਏ ਸਹਿਆ ਸਸਤਾ

Anything is expensive when you are poor
Anything is cheap when you are rich

17) ਠ-Thathaa

ਠਾਹ ਸੋਟਾ ਨਾ ਮਾਰੀਏ
ਕਰਤਾਰੋੰ ਡਰੀਏ

You should be afraid of God(karma) before saying something mean.

18) ਡ-Dadda

ਡਿੱਗੀ ਖੋਤੇ ਤੋਂ
ਗੁੱਸਾ ਘੁਮਿਆਰ ਤੇ

Fell from the donkey
angry on the potter
(Being angry at someone for one’s own bad decision/someone else’s fault)

19) ਢ-Dhadda

ਢੱਕੀ ਰਿੱਝੇ
ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਬੁੱਝੇ

Keep the fight between you two
don’t let the common enemy know

20) ਣ-nanna

No word starts with this

21) ਤ-Tatta

ਤੇਲ ਵੇਖੋ ਤੇਲ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਵੇਖੋ

Examine the situation fully before acting

22) ਥ-Thatha

ਥੁੱਕੀਂ ਵੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਕਦੇ

No accomplishments without hard work.

23) ਦ-Dadda

ਦਿਲ ਹੋਵੇ ਚੰਗਾ
ਕਟੋਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੰਗਾ

If your heart is pure
pilgrimage is at home.

24) ਧ-Dhadhaa

ਧੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਢੀ
ਟਕਾ ਸਿਰ ਮੁਨਾਈ

Spending time/resources to decorate something menial/cheap.

25) ਨ-Nanna

ਨਾ ਕੰਮ ਦਾ ਨਾ ਕਾਜ ਦਾ
ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਅਨਾਜ ਦਾ

You’re of no use, you’re of no skill
You’re and enemy of food

(Used for someone lazy)

26) ਪ-pappa

(This one is very special because my dad used it A LOT)

ਪਰ-ਹੱਥੀਂ ਵਣਜ ਸੁਨੇਹੀਂ ਖੇਤੀ
ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਬੱਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਤੇਤੀ

Leaving work under someone’s command never comes to fruition.

27) ਫ-Faffa

ਫਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ
ਉੱਡਦੀਆਂ ਮਗਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈਦਾ

A Bird in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush

28) ਬ-Babba

ਬੂਹੇ ਢੁੱਕੀ ਜੰਨ
ਤੇ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹੋ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਨ

Leaving some essential work to the last minute

29) ਭ-Bhabba

ਭੁੱਖੇ ਜੱਟ ਕਟੋਰਾ ਲੱਭਾ
ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀ-ਪੀ ਆਫਰਿਆ

When a person would find something rare but useless and would go crazy after that thing.

30) ਮ-Mamma

ਮੱਝ ਵੇਚ ਕੇ ਘੋੜੀ ਲਈ
ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀਣੋਂ ਗਏ ਲਿੱਦ ਸੁੱਟਣੀ ਪਈ

Sold my cow, bought a horse
no milk to drink, only shit to shovel

When your good transaction turns bad

31) ਯ-Yayya

ਯੱਕਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਰ ਭਾਰੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ

When someone stars complaining as soon as they see help.

32) ਰ-Rarra

ਰੱਬਾ ਰਿਜਕ ਨਾ ਦੇਈਂ
ਮਾਂ ਲੱਕੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜੂਗੀ

God, please don't give us food
or mother will ask me to go find kindling

This is used when someone is uber-lazy

(Personal note-This is my favorite idiom of all. My mother used it so freely, well, since I was that child)

33) ਲ-Lalla

ਲੇਖਾ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਦਾ
ਟਕਾ ਲੇਖ ਬਖਸ਼ੀਸ਼

You should always repay your debt

34) ਵ-Vavva

ਵਾਰਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾ ਆਦਤਾਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੱਟੀਏ ਪੋਰੀਆਂ ਪੋਰੀਆਂ ਜੀ

You cannot change someone's habits.

Wrapping Up
It has been quite an experience rummaging through my brains to compile this list. This is very tiny glimpse of idioms I have inherited from my mother and it was painful to leave certain ones out. So, I am adding some honourable mentions in the end. Here we go:

ਬੁੱਢੀ ਘੋੜੀ, ਲਾਲ ਲਗਾਮ
Old horse, red bridle

Used when someone wears something unflattering.

ਵਾਦੜੀਆਂ ਸਜਾਦੜੀਆਂ ਨਿਭਣ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ
ਜ਼ਹਿਮਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਦਾਰੂਆਂ, ਆਦਤ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ

Promises should be kept, even if you die
medicine cures illness, nothing cures habit

ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਡੁੱਬਾ
ਜਦ ਘੋੜੀ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਕੁੱਬਾ

Expecting great things from lazy person
