@NEJM published an article about Misrepresenting Race in Medicine and guess what? They talk about the Akimel O'odham and diabetes. The article says "U.S. Akimel O'odham (formally known as Pima)" someone used Wikipedia and did not talk to the tribes. I am trying to understand.
I am Akimel O'odam. I am Pima. We have always been Akimel O'odham. In our language it mean River People. We have always been here. We are still here.
Why can't doctors talk to us? Why publish something and not talk to us? Why??? @DorothyERoberts
This hurts! I don't know what to do. I am sending this to the tribal council, governor, and my mom. This deserves an erratum and an apology. This is an important article it deserves discussion. It deserves time and attention. Please consult with tribes! Thank you!
Btw my grandfather participated in the diabetes studies of the Akimel O'odham/ Pima for over a decade. This is personal.
Last thing before I go back to my work, for all you non-Indigenous people Navajo is the English and Dinè is the people. Akimel O'odham is the people and Pima is the English. I can't explain the linguistics because I am not a speaker, but this should make sense to a lot of people.
