I'm a little amazed by how quickly the Democratic victories in Georgia dropped off the news radar yesterday amidst the violence at the Capitol given how closely those two events are linked (incoming thread –>)
For the last 40 years, many Democrats have written off the South as a GOP stronghold not worth competing for. But this cycle, Georgia elected a Democratic president and TWO Democratic senators. Georgia isn't a red state, it's simply been subjected to decades of voter suppression.
The conservative movement as a whole (and Trumpism in particular) is a reaction to the ongoing demographic and power shift we're seeing across the country (and especially in states like Georgia) where the rich white establishment is starting to lose its stranglehold on power.
When conservatives talk about "law and order," they specifically mean laws upholding a sociopolitical order that puts rich white people at the top. They will react violently to anything that threatens that order, which is why you saw rioters waving "blue lives matter" flags.
The U.S. power structure is ultimately a system of minority rule. Red states have more electoral power than blue states, a president who lost the popular vote can appoint judges confirmed by a Senate "majority" representing a minority of voters, gerrymandered House districts, etc
The violence at the Capitol yesterday was FUNDAMENTALLY a symptom of the long-term power shift which the Dem victories in Georgia represent. You simply can't talk about one event without the other if you want to truly understand what's happening.
Of course, this is nothing new. The Civil War was fought to uphold minority rule when the South's system was threatened. The KKK was founded to bring down Reconstruction governments that allowed Black representation. Law enforcement aided violent attacks on civil rights activists
Was the violence at the Capitol shocking? Absolutely. But if you've been paying attention at all for the last four, 40, or 400 years, it shouldn't have been surprising. And it will only keep happening as states like Georgia continue to dismantle their systems of minority rule.
I'm now seeing calls for armed marches on ALL state capitols on January 17, so this just became a nationwide crisis. Republicans are actively fomenting violent insurrection – the GOP isn't a political party, it's a terrorist group.
Like I said, this is what conservatives mean when they talk about "law and order" https://twitter.com/thenation/status/1347232193341513736?s=20
