Chinese state-run media bashed our politicians for having supported Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters. The chair of the foreign affairs committee in the upper house of Russia’s parliament said American democracy is "obviously now limping on both feet."
The riot prompted a string of humiliating statements: Turkey urged "restraint and common sense." Venezuela condemned the "spiral of violence" in Washington. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that "what happened in the United States showed how weak Western democracy is."
Germany’s Foreign Minister says that “the enemies of democracy will be thrilled to see these unbelievable pictures” out of D.C.: “Riotous words turn into violent acts — on the steps of the Reichstag, and now in the Capitol. The disdain for democratic institutions is devastating.”
