Yesterday morning, I was talking about the second of five key concepts -related to all forms of media, but specifically, for our purposes, social- with my Media Literacy and Composition students.
Key Concept #2 - Media messages shape our perceptions of reality.

Yesterday’s attack on Congress, instigated by months of media messages, makes pretty doggone plain the truth of this assertion.

and to distance ourselves from those that do not align with reality, not only for our own health and well-being, but for the greater goods of our continuing democratic project’s success and a desire to see our brothers and sisters thrive.
We all have work to do when it comes to evaluating the messages we receive, regardless of where we receive them, but perhaps especially those we receive from the media.
The work of becoming a person involves by necessity beginning to develop the skills necessary to discern credible information (truth) from dis/misinformation (fiction).
Yesterday’s events make plain to me that this challenge I presented to my students is applicable to all of us.
As Viktor Frankl observed, this is because “the world is in a bad state, but everything will become far worse unless each of us does his best.”

Anyway, if you’re interested in this conversation or have just always wanted to “attend” my Media Literacy and Composition class remotely, lol, feel free to watch yesterday’s lecture.
It’s not the best teaching you’ll ever see, but it’s something we owe it to ourselves to be thinking about these days.
