The same people who paraded a confederate battle flag through the halls of our capitol yesterday have been quoting this all over the place since forever.
I point this out not merely to zing them for low self-awareness, but to show the reductive, seductive danger of this quote. https://twitter.com/ZaknafeinDC/status/1347165638289190914

There's a speech from a Captain America comic that was incorporated into one of the movies, in both cases for Marvel's Civil War storyline, about planting yourself like a tree beside the river of truth.
The Nazis that surround us? They love it.

Speech goes like this:
"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right...

This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences.

When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — 'No, you move.'"

And ooh, doesn't that just give you chills? Isn't that inspiring?
It's exactly how the people who stormed the capitol felt about what they were doing. I saw as many Captain America symbols as I did Punisher ones in the photos from yesterday.

Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris won the election. We can say this is uncontested fact, but we can't stop people who believe otherwise from contesting it. We can say it's undeniable, yet people can and will deny it.
Nothing is undeniable. Not a thing.
Nothing is undeniable. Not a thing.
Even while they carry flags of rebellion, these people think they are Ulysses S. Grant making a stand for truth and justice and the American Way. Nothing stops them from thinking this. Nothing can stop them from thinking it.
We like to think that there's some kind of failsafe of rationality built into the human brain that will kick in and override when somebody tries to believe two things that are contradictory, or something obviously false.
There is not.
There is not.
They Nazis who tried to overturn our democratic election yesterday also divide this country into patriots and traitors. That's why they acted. They think they're bold patriots fighting a righteous and just war against traitors who would destroy our country.
Yes. We are not rational creatures but rationalizing ones. There is nothing we can't rationalize, given sufficient motivation. https://twitter.com/maxleibman/status/1347246441195048960
