Why doesn’t UCP get that if they, and their constituents really want kids back in school, they need to do more than just claim that their plan was ‘robust’ and ‘protective’? Teachers want to be back in school too. Few people really like this online teaching. 1/7
Most people miss in person connections, feedback, etc. But just pretending there is no covid problem in schools with crowded classrooms is not borne out by any facts. The curve of the outbreak exactly follows when kids were in/out of school by about 1-2 incubation periods. 2/7
If 30+ kids are sitting in a room with masks off to eat, how can covid NOT spread? How is that safer than having someone come to your home for dinner, especially if at home you CAN sit all the way across the room? 3/7
When Dr. Hinshaw evasively says the plan is ‘protective’, it means that what schools are doing is keeping kids safer than if there were no measures at all in place. Obviously. And schools ARE going above and beyond to make it work, as well as it can. 4/7
Contact tracing broke down months ago. We had covid in our house that came home from school (no other possibility), and AHS NEVER did contact tracing on this. AT ALL. So when UCP claims it’s ‘safe’, that is based on...nothing. 5/7
Again, having schools open is an important goal. It’s better for kids’ learning. Teachers get that parents are depending on them for childcare too. But, it cannot and will not be safe until UCP spends some money to make large classes smaller and spread kids out. 7/7
